Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz has decided not to seek a third term, which will bring an end to a long career serving in town government.

Brantz was a historian at Appalachian State University and that's partly what led him to get involved in local politics in the early 2000s.

“As a historian you deal with politics all the time, mine was German politics,” he says. “But it gave me some interests I thought I could pursue in the town government. Also, I was concerned about the quality of government and life in our community and thought I could make maybe a difference.”

Brantz served multiple terms on the town council before being elected mayor in 2015. He says he's pleased that more young people have gotten involved in Boone's government during his tenure, and confident that the town is headed in the right direction.

Tim Futrelle is the only candidate who's filed to run for the mayor's seat in the November 2 municipal election, so he'll be unopposed in the non-partisan race.
