N.C. A&T's nursing program will be getting a $1 million donation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

A&T Chancellor Harold Martin tweeted a message of thanks to Blue Cross Wednesday morning.

Martin said the money will allow the university to offer more scholarships, update equipment and address nursing shortages.

The News and Record reports the donation is the latest in a string of gifts from Blue Cross to nursing programs at historically black North Carolina colleges and universities.

Earlier this year, donations were made to programs at Winston-Salem State, N.C. Central University and Fayetteville State University.

Blue Cross NC announced in February it would spend $50 million dollars on community health initiatives across the state. The health insurer said the money comes from savings due to new federal tax cuts enacted in December.
