Andy Murray to Compete in the Winston-Salem Open

Andy Murray was the year-end No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings in 2016. He owns three Grand Slam singles titles, including the US Open in 2012, Wimbledon in 2013 and again in 2016. Credit: SM_SERENA.

Three-time Grand Slam-winning tennis player Andy Murray is playing in this year's Winston-Salem Open

The former world number one player is entering the playing field as a wild card in the tournament. In addition to his many professional winnings, Andy Murray is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

This will be his first time playing in Winston-Salem. At a press conference, he spoke highly of the courts and facilities at the Winston-Salem Open, based on what he's heard from other players.

The upcoming match comes after a period of relative inactivity. The 32-year old tennis star underwent his second hip surgery earlier this year. That caused him to miss five months of play.

The 2019 Winston-Salem Open will run from August 17 through August 24 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
