There is a movement afoot to have Tom Ross stay on as UNC system president. An online petition is making the rounds calling for Ross's reinstatement.
A group calling itself United for UNC launched a petition drive online at www.change.org this weekend.
The petition attracted 430 signatures as of 10am Tuesday.
The News and Record of Greensboro reports the completed petition will be delivered to members of the UNC system's Board of Governors.
The board voted January 16th to have Ross step down at year's end.
Board members gave no reason for their decision, but critics have blamed it on politics.
Ross has been affiliated with Democrats for years and nearly every current board member was appointed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly.
Ross, meanwhile, said he was not ready to step down.
