Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina has bought the former Food Lion store at Loehmann's Plaza in Winston Salem. The Goodwill donation center in the plaza will remain open while existing structures are torn down.

Goodwill Industries has not disclosed the sum it paid for the property, which is at the intersection of Reynolda and Yadkinville Roads.

Bill Haymore of Goodwill told the Winston-Salem Journal that the company plans to build a retail store and workforce development center.

Haymore says it will probably be about two years before Goodwill starts to build on the property, which is just over 3 acres.

The exact size of the new buildings hasn't yet been determined.

The Food Lion store is the last remnant of the original Loehmann's Plaza, which opened in 1979. The store moved to a larger location in 1997.
