Rockingham County Schools will likely have to cut jobs. The district is looking at ways to make up for a budget shortfall.

The News and Record reports Rockingham is facing a $4 million dollar deficit, and will likely lay off 49 employees.

School officials based those numbers on an anticipated decrease in state funding.

The Board is expected to pass a $113.1 million proposed budget at Monday night's meeting.

If that happens, almost 20 media assistants, 27 support staff members and three assistant principals won't return next year.

Also under the proposed budget, a number of enhancement teachers, who oversee such subjects as music and physical education, will be put on rotating schedules.

Superintendent Rodney Shotwell says the school has no cash reserves, but is hoping for relief from the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners.

Many school board members aren't happy with cutting positions and say they want to hear alternatives.
