Guilford College has exceeded its $5 million fundraising goal.

The college wrapped up its “For the Good of Guilford” campaign in June. The effort raised $6 million, a million more than the original goal.

The milestone comes at an important time. Guilford’s financial situation led to probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, also known as SACS.

Without that agency’s accreditation, students can’t get federal student loans, which would impact enrollment.

Guilford College's Acting President Jean Bordewich says exceeding the fundraising goal gives the college some momentum for its future.

“We're moving towards Guilford remaining a small liberal arts college,” she says. “We're trying to emphasize ethical leadership. We're trying to focus on building community in a world where we need to have more community building. So I think as we move forward financially, we also have to move forward in terms of our mission.”

SACS is expected to make its final accreditation decision in December.
