Former NC House Rep. Derwin Montgomery sentenced to 4 months in federal prison

WFDD FILE
Montgomery served on the Winston-Salem Council from 2009-2018.

Former Winston-Salem City Council Member Derwin Montgomery will serve time in federal prison in connection with a fraud conviction.

Montgomery was sentenced to probation in 2023 after he was found guilty of charging personal expenses to the Bethesda Center for the Homeless during his time as executive director. He was also ordered to pay about $60,000 in fines and restitution.

Court documents show Montgomery is now $9,000 behind on those payments — a violation of his probation. This week, a judge sentenced him to four months behind bars. She also ordered him to seek employment and mental health treatment upon his release.

Montgomery was elected to the Winston-Salem City Council in 2009, while he was still a student at Winston-Salem State University. He served until 2018, then held a seat in the North Carolina House until 2020.
