1 injured and 1 apprehended in shooting at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem

Updated Aug. 15, 7:54 a.m.

The Winston-Salem Police Department says shortly after arriving on the scene, one individual was found suffering from gunshot wounds outside of Hanes Mall. Emergency Services Personnel tended to the victim before moving them to a nearby hospital.

The WSPD Violent Firearms and Investigation Team took over the investigation. It was determined that a “verbal altercation” inside the mall led to the shooting, and the incident was not deemed a random act of violence.

Soon after a suspect was found at 3330 Silas Creek Parkway and apprehended without incident.

Hanes Mall is no longer on lockdown, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department. WSPD notes that the entrance beside Dave and Busters is still closed and contains a heavy police presence. The investigation is ongoing.

Several workers said the shooting occurred on the first floor of the mall, the Winston-Salem Journal reported. A police officer also told the outlet that he and another officer were nearby after receiving reports of a suspicious person.
