Winston-Salem Cycling Classic participant dies after 'medical emergency'

An amateur cyclist participating in the weekend’s Winston-Salem Cycling Classic died during an event on Saturday morning.

According to a press release, the cyclist experienced a “medical emergency,” and was found unresponsive on Union Cross Road. The incident occurred outside of police jurisdiction, so Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office responded.

As of Sunday afternoon, no additional information regarding the deceased was available.

The event coordinators thanked EMS responders, and offered condolences to the family of the person who died.

The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is a two-day racing event for professional and amateur riders, and is part of the Gears & Guitars concert and cycling weekend.
