UNC Health Care: Patient Information May Have Been Leaked

The University of North Carolina Health Care System is alerting some patients that their medical information may have been compromised.

On Monday, UNC Health Care sent letters to 1,300 prenatal patients. It states their confidential medical records may have been shared with their home county health departments by mistake.

The letters were specifically targeted at those who completed "Pregnancy Home Risk Screening Forms" between April 2014 and February 2017.

These forms are used to collect personal information from Medicaid-eligible prenatal patients. This helps connect them with health care services in their local health department.

But according to the Associated Press, a system review revealed that forms completed by women who were not eligible for Medicaid may have been accidentally leaked.

The breach may have included physical and mental health information, as well as social security numbers and other personal data.
