More people than expected want to lead North Carolina's Democratic party. This comes just weeks before party activists meet to choose Chairman Randy Voller's successor.

Voller said Thursday six people have contacted the state party as candidates for the post. The party's State Executive Committee - comprised of several hundred Democrats - is slated to elect a new chair Feb. 7 in Pittsboro.

The candidates include current First Vice Chairwoman Patsy Keever of Asheville, Marshal Adame of Jacksonville, and Connie Johnson of Salisbury. Others are Janice Covington Allison of Charlotte, Tommy Davis of Aberdeen, and Ron Sanyal of Raleigh.

Several candidate town hall forums are being held before the meeting.

Voller said in November he would not seek a second two-year term.
