New App Aims To Bolster The Outdoors And Tourism In Guilford County

Local leaders gathered at the Piedmont Environmental Center in High Point on Wednesday to unveil the new app. It was a joint project between the cities and county parks departments and Greensboro’s Information Technology department, which designed the app. Photo courtesy of Amanda Lehmert with the City of Greensboro.

There's a new tool to help people explore recreational opportunities in Guilford County.

Piedmont Discovery is a free mobile application that will allow residents and visitors to find parks, greenways, and other amenities near them. City leaders in Greensboro, High Point, and Guilford County teamed up for the project.

App users can search for parks or trails nearest to them, find directions, and connect with local parks department websites for more details about each location. The app also lets users explore trails based on their difficulty and terrain.

“We want opportunities for individuals to improve their physical and mental wellbeing,” says Shawna Tillery, Planning and Project Development Division Manager with Greensboro's Parks and Recreation Department. “We want residents to have a closer connection to nature and a greater sense of community by having an application that really gives them all of the opportunities that are available to them locally.”

The app only provides information for sites in Guilford County, but Tillery says in the future, organizers hope to work with other communities to increase its regional span.
