Winston-Salem Forsyth County Earmarks SRO Funding

Winston-Salem Forsyth County school district has finalized new contracts for school resource officers for the coming school year.

The district will spend several million dollars on school resource officers from three different law enforcement agencies.

That includes about two dozen officers and supervisors from the Winston-Salem Police Department, and roughly another dozen from Kernersville and the sheriff's department.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports money was also allotted to install front door buzzers at its middle schools.

New Fiscal Year Means New Laws Take Effect

The new fiscal year means a host of new laws taking effect.

WUNC reports that as part of Governor Roy Cooper's Administration green lighting the Atlantic Coast Pipeline project, pipeline developers agreed to put $52 million into a special fund. The Republican-controlled legislature called it a slush fund and then took control of the money by putting them into a new budget provision. Now the funds will be funneled to schools in counties in the project path. That same law provides moneys for phased-in class-size reductions.

Another new law corrects an oversight in the expedited budgeting process by restoring $350 thousand for a suicide prevention hotline.

Under another new provision, North Carolina highway troopers may be required to repay the state a portion of their training costs if they do not remain troopers for three years.

North Carolina is rolling out a welcome mat for the nation's newest citizens.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials will welcome those new citizens during a special naturalization ceremony at the Fort Johnson Garrison House in Southport Tuesday.

A U.S. Magistrate Judge will administer the oath of allegiance to 48 candidates.

The ceremony is part of the agency's Independence Day celebration.

Bodies Of 2 Men Recovered From Lake Norman

Authorities say the bodies of a man and his nephew have been recovered from a North Carolina lake several days after they disappeared while on a boating trip.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission identified the men as 38-year-old Fredrick Martin and 48-year-old Earnest Norris Jr. Their bodies were found by civilians on Sunday.

According to officials, the men were reported missing last Friday after they didn't return, and their boat was found capsized in Lake Norman on Saturday, when the search was suspended.

Hornets Sign Bridges; Hire 5 Assistant Coaches

The Hornets have signed first-round draft pick Miles Bridges from Michigan State and hired five assistant coaches.

Bridges, a forward, was a unanimous 2017-18 All-Big Ten first-team selection and second-team All-American selection at Michigan State where he led the Spartans in scoring at 17 points per game last season.

The Hornets also signed J.P. Macura, an undrafted guard from Xavier, to a two-way contract.

Charlotte announced it has hired Jay Triano, Chad Iske, Jay Hernandez, Ronald Nored and Dutch Gaitley as assistant coaches on James Borrego's staff.
