US Gun Maker Remington Files For Bankruptcy Protection

U.S. gun maker Remington Outdoor Company has filed for bankruptcy protection, after years of falling sales and lawsuits tied to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Records from the bankruptcy court of the district of Delaware show that the company filed late Sunday.

Remington, which is based in Madison, North Carolina, had in February reached a deal with lenders to reduce its debt by about $700 million and add about $145 million in new capital. But that only bought time for it to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Remington makes the Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle that was used in the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut that left 20 first-graders and six educators dead in 2012.

Former Dem Powerbroker Fitch Slated For Senate Appointment

A former powerbroker in North Carolina's General Assembly is ready to return to the legislature to fill a newly vacant seat.

The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports that a local Democratic Party committee picked Milton "Toby" Fitch Jr. to fill the state Senate seat for the rest of this year. The Rocky Mount-area seat opened after Sen. Angela Bryant resigned and took a $117,000 job on the state parole commission.

Fitch represented Edgecombe and Wilson counties in the state House from 1984 to 2001.

He retired last month from his position as a Superior Court judge, a role he held for more than 16 years.

Sale Of Snack Company Snyder's-Lance Could Close Soon

The maker of Lance peanut butter sandwich crackers and Snyder's of Hanover pretzels is set to be taken over by one of the largest U.S. packaged food companies.

Charlotte-based snack maker Snyder's-Lance Inc. says shareholders overwhelmingly approved its planned sale to Camden, New Jersey-based Campbell Soup Co. and the deal is set to close Monday.

Snyder's-Lance said more than 99 percent of votes cast at a special meeting Friday backed the $4.9 billion sale announced in December.

Campbell Soup said the acquisition would allow it to expand its distribution channels in the crowded snack market.

Opioid Medication Is Most-Prescribed Drug In North Carolina

A new map shows the 10 most widely-prescribed drugs in each state. In North Carolina, an opioid pain pill tops the list.

Norco and Vicodin ranked number one as the most prescribed medication in North Carolina and in nine other states, including several in the South.

The drugs are mixtures of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. They're often prescribed after surgery or to treat chronic pain and are highly addictive.

The second most prescribed drug in the state was Synthroid, a hormone replacement used to treat hypothyroidism, followed by Adderall.

Planned Russian Statue Starts Mini-Cold War In North Carolina City

An effort to honor Soviet aviators who trained on the North Carolina coast as part of a secret spy project has triggered a miniature Cold War in North Carolina.

The Russian Ministry of Defense wants to place a 25-ton bronze monument in Elizabeth City, where the recently declassified "Project Zebra" took place during World War II.

But amid today's fears about Russian hacking of U.S. elections, city officials rejected an agreement to allow the monument.

The monument would honor five foreigners killed when a seaplane crashed in the Pasquotank River in 1945. Their bodies were never found.

A council member who supports the monument says some who oppose it are "confusing current events with history."
