Guilford County Schools has received a $500,000 award through a nationwide competition.

The Fannie Mae Sustainable Communities Innovation Challenge sought new solutions to stubborn problems facing the nation when it comes to affordable housing.

The school system's submission is called “Safer Together Green Housing.” It emphasizes the district's construction education program and will allow students to partner with groups such as Cone Health and the Greensboro Housing Coalition.

The collaboration will focus on teaching students about green housing, mapping technology, and affordable housing.

Through the initiative, participants hope to rehab 40 homes a year, which will then help those homeowners qualify for other assistance.
