Travel along Business 40 in Winston-Salem may be more congested as the first phase of a major road improvement project has officially begun.

That first project is the overhaul of the Peters Creek Parkway Interchange. The work includes a new bridge with sidewalks that cross Business 40. In addition, crews are adding new loops and ramps to access the highway and stretching it from four lanes to six.

“While we are working on the Peter's Creek Parkway Interchange, we will not be shutting down Business 40,” says Mezak Tucker, an engineer with NCDOT. “For the most part, the only impacts that most motorists will see are nighttime lane closures along Business 40 and along Peters Creek Parkway."

Lane closures currently run from 9:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Tucker says detours will also be used from midnight until 6 a.m. at times during the construction process.

“I would advise motorists to slow down and use caution when traveling through the area and expect some minimal traffic delays,” he says.

All of this construction is expected to be complete next fall.

But the biggest part of the Business 40 Improvement Project is yet to come. NCDOT says it will completely shutdown a one-mile stretch of the roadway in late 2018.
