Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and the city council will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Saturday to celebrate the completion of Bethania Freedman's Park.

According to a news release, it will provide several amenities including a picnic shelter, walking trail and restrooms. The project cost more than $800,000 and was funded by bonds approved by voters in 2018.

The park commemorates a historic community that was founded by African Americans after the Civil War.

Before the war, many were enslaved in the areas surrounding Bethania. According to the news release, these enslaved individuals along with others born free who worked in town, gave Bethania the largest Black population of any town in Forsyth County.

The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. at 1569 Bethania-Rural Hall Road, near Fire Station 20.
