1 Fatally Shot, 1 Injured At Winston-Salem State University

An earlier press release from the university named a suspect believed to be involved in the shooting. By this afternoon, however, both the school and police declined comment on the suspect.

Students at Winston-Salem State University are planning a prayer vigil at the school's clock tower at 6 p.m.

Mayor Allen Joines issued the following statement today about the shooting early Sunday morning on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. One student was killed and another injured.

“The city joins the Winston-Salem State community in grieving the death of one student and the injury of another. This terrible incident has marred what should have been a weekend of celebration for the new chancellor and for returning alumni enjoying their homecoming weekend. I urge all the citizens of Winston-Salem to keep these students, their families, and the Winston-Salem State community in their thoughts and prayers.”

The person killed has been identified as 19-year old Anthony White, Junior. He was a second-year student. 

ORIGINAL STORY:

Winston-Salem State University has confirmed that one person was fatally shot early Sunday morning on campus and another was injured. According to a statement from the university, at approximately 1:20 a.m., the shooting happened in the area of Lot W near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace. Both are believed to be students. 

The campus was put on temporary lockdown around 1:30 a.m. and the curfew was lifted at approximately 4:50 a.m. The campus has been cleared; the gunman has not been apprehended.

Emily joined WFDD in 2014. It's a homecoming after 11 years working in public radio for stations in colder climates. She graduated from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 2003, where she earned her degree in music. She moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where she saw an advertisement on the side of a bus for the local station, WFIU, and began volunteering. That turned into a full time gig, where Emily did everything from producing fund drives, co-hosting a classical music quiz show, and handling station relations. In 2007, Emily accepted a position at WYSO in Yellow Springs, Ohio, as the host of All Things Considered. It was there that Emily learned how to be a reporter. Her stories won state and national awards and were regularly featured on NPR. Emily became News Director at WYSO in 2011.Now, she's back in North Carolina and happily leading the news team at WFDD. She lives in Winston-Salem with her husband and two children.
