Forsyth County Jail officials and members of the sheriff's department are charged in a wrongful death lawsuit. Dino Vann Nixon's wife filed the suit for his estate in Forsyth Superior Court.

The suit alleges that Nixon's worsening mental and physical condition was ignored over a period of three weeks until his death in August 2013. Nixon, arrested on drug trafficking charges, had been prescribed Xanax, Ambien and Vicodin in specific dosages for years and told jail officials about the medication.

Jail officials, according to the lawsuit, refused to provide the medication and failed to pay attention to his medical condition. Nixon died four days before he was scheduled to appear in Court.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, also charged is Correct Care Solutions, which the county contracts with to provide medical care in the jail. County commissioners recently extended their contract.

The lawsuit alleges that the county jail lacked sufficient training to have prevented Nixon's death. A trial date has not been set.
