The Guilford County District Attorney has released new information about her decision not to pursue a full state investigation into the actions of Greensboro’s former City Attorney Chuck Watts.
DA Avery Crump says she met with State Bureau of Investigation agents late last week to review misconduct allegations against Watts. Based on the presented information, she ultimately determined no crime had been committed.
But in a statement, Crump said this doesn’t mean her office “believes the matter was in all respects handled appropriately from an administrative viewpoint.”
The statement noted the DA’s office has no administrative authority over city personnel or contracting decisions.
Watts resigned abruptly on July 2, weeks after a citizen publicly raised questions about his business dealings with a firm called Cyberlux. Watts has denied any wrongdoing.
Lora Cubbage was named his replacement on July 8.
A separate SBI investigation into an unnamed member of Greensboro’s City Council is ongoing.
