Guilford County is seeking input from residents in a survey for its multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan.
The plan aims to provide a roadmap for responding to severe thunderstorms, hurricanes and other hazardous events.
According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, there were 27 climate disaster events across the country last year. That's up from the annual average of only nine between 1980 and 2024.
Guilford County's Emergency Services Spokesperson Scott Muthersbaugh says officials are focused on hazards specific to the area, such as flooding.
"We try to identify any gaps that we have with trying to mitigate those issues, and then work on closing them, to make sure that we are doing everything we can that is practical and possible to stay out ahead of any kind of issues that we can see," he says.
Muthersbaugh says community input helps the county to improve its responses. Individuals can submit comments to help update the plan by Aug. 31.
