Second primary to determine GOP nomination for key NC offices is Tuesday

The second primary for two statewide offices is taking place Tuesday.

On the ballot for lieutenant governor is Duke University graduate and Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill. He received roughly 16% of the Republican primary vote in March. He’ll go up against Wake Forest University alumnus Hal Weatherman who received nearly 20% on Super Tuesday. Weatherman served as former Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest’s chief of staff.

In the primary runoff for state auditor, it’s Republicans Dave Boliek and Jack Clark who each received just over a fifth of the primary vote. Boliek is a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, prosecuting attorney, and UNC Board member overseeing investments. Clark is a Duke University graduate, budget policy analyst in the General Assembly and CPA.

Under North Carolina law, a primary candidate with more than 30% of the vote wins their party’s nomination, but runner-up candidates can request a second primary if no one receives more than 30% of the vote.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and will remain open until 7:30 p.m.
