State and local transportation officials will launch new travel survey in Triad region

Some Triad households will get an invitation in the mail to participate in a new transportation survey.

The goal is to help transportation officials decide how to fund future projects that help with improved mobility, better safety, and more efficient drive times.

The Triad Travel Counts survey invitation will be mailed to randomly selected people in the region. It’s sponsored by The North Carolina Department of Transportation. The agency is collaborating with local Metropolitan Planning Organizations including those in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Burlington/Graham, and High Point for the effort.

The survey asks about travel experiences and habits. Participating households will receive $10 after completing the survey online, which generally takes about 10-15 minutes. Those who fill out a one-day travel log could get additional incentives ranging up to $50.

Kelly Garvin is with the Metropolitan Planning Organization in Winston-Salem. She says the timing is important as the region continues to grow.

“If you suffer from a lot of congestion in your area, or it takes you a long time from going to get groceries to get to your house, to go pick up your kids and all of these things, we don’t know that," says Garvin. "And so, we are seeking out that information so we can better the transportation network for all of us.”

The survey invitations are expected to land in mailboxes around October 10. It will remain open through April.
