Republican Dale Folwell of Forsyth County won his reelection bid for state treasurer, defeating Democratic challenger Ronnie Chatterji.

Folwell, who lives in Winston-Salem, started his political career in Forsyth County. He served on the local school board and previously served in the legislature.

Health care was a key topic in this race. Folwell was hospitalized with COVID-19 in March and says he understands how important this issue is in the state.

He says he will continue to push for his Clear Pricing Project, which he says will boost transparency in the state health plan and lower costs. The plan has received pushback from some major hospital groups and providers.

Folwell says he knows it will be a tough budget year with the pandemic. But says he remains committed to his priorities, despite any shortfalls.

"Number one is to keep our pension plan fully funded," he says. "Number two is to get rid of secret contracts in health care, and number three is to focus on rural North Carolina — all rural North Carolina — and especially eastern North Carolina."

Folwell won the North Carolina Treasurer's seat with more than 52 percent of the vote.

His opponent Ronnie Chatterji is a Duke University business professor who served as an economic advisor to the Obama administration.
