Governor Roy Cooper has tapped High Point attorney Marc Tyrey to fill the unexpired term of Judge Tom Jarrell, who died in August.
20 years ago, Jarrell and Tyrey served together as young prosecutors in Guilford County's High Point courthouse. It was from that position that Jarrell became a district court judge.
Now Tyrey will be taking his place. He says he hopes to bring Jarrell's work ethic to the job.
“No one ever complained about Judge Jarrell not being available, not issuing orders, not being on the bench when he was supposed to be," Tyrey says. "And he was fair to people, he listened to people, and those are the types of things I want to emulate."
Tyrey has managed the Tyrey Law firm since 2010 and has also been an adjunct professor at Guilford College.
“Marc has been an integral part of the Guilford County legal community for more than 20 years, and I appreciate his commitment to continue serving,” Cooper said in a release.
Jarrell's death at 56 from a heroin and fentanyl overdose shocked the local legal community.
Tyrey will fill his unexpired term, which runs through 2022.
