Guilford County Schools Responds To Potential Bus Driver Walkout

The Guilford County Schools administrative building in Greensboro, NC. BETHANY CHAFIN/WFDD

The Guilford County Schools says nearly 150 drivers have submitted leave request forms for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Drivers are requesting higher wages and better access to health insurance.

Angie Henry is Chief Financial Officer with Guilford County Schools. She says she agrees that bus driver pay needs to increase but that employees should take their concerns to the county and state.

“Guilford County Schools is not a revenue-generating government body," she says. "We have no authority to tax. We have no way of generating dollars to address this. We consistently asked and advocated at the state level that the state create a salary scale for bus drivers that's reasonable.”

Henry says the district has not been notified by anyone in an official capacity what the plan for the walkout is and what drivers' specific asks are. She says school will go on as planned.
