FemFest Brings Bands Together During Domestic Violence Awareness Month

A concert to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault is taking place on Saturday in Winston-Salem.

FemFest, now in its sixth year, features bands from the Southeast that are made up of primarily female musicians. Some of the acts this year include Cold Cream, True Lilith, Mama, and the P-90s.

Organizer Bryn Fox says she started FemFest as a way for bands with powerful messages in their music to come together during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“These women that have come out to play music have been through their own experiences, and they have found an outlet in music to get that out and spread the message," says Fox. "And I hope that everybody who comes out understands that they always have somebody looking out for them.”

Proceeds will go to Family Services to help fund their women's shelter. Fox says it's a place where women in abusive relationships can turn.

“If they're in a relationship that feels unsafe at any time, or they've been a victim of sexual assault, there's always someone to talk to, and that doesn't have to define who they are,” says Fox.

FemFest takes place Saturday, October 19, at Monstercade in Winston-Salem.
