Renaissance Community Co-op, a community-owned grocery store in Greensboro is closing its doors.

The news was announced in a letter Wednesday from the co-op's board to its 1,300 members. In it, the board says that the store is not making enough money from sales to cover expenses.

Renaissance opened in 2016 with help from partners like the City of Greensboro and the Fund for Democratic Communities in order to address a food desert in Northeast Greensboro.

According to the board's statement, the goal was to build a self-sustaining store that met the neighborhood's needs for good jobs and fresh, affordable food.

The letter thanked its members for the support and said ending a food desert, if only for a few years, was an accomplishment.

Renaissance Community Co-op will close on January 25.
