A longtime member of the Guilford County School Board is stepping down before the end of his term and won't seek re-election.
Alan Duncan has served on the board for 18 years. He was on the ballot for another term, but has decided to drop out of the race.
Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Duncan to the State Board of Education in April. He's leaving the Guilford board to focus on that and other education efforts.
Duncan was chair of the board's budget committee and is known as an advocate for more funding for public schools.
His last day as a board member is June 30. Vice Chair Deena Hayes will become chairwoman, and Wes Cashwell will become the vice chair.
Duncan is a Democrat, so county party leaders will submit a recommendation by the end of the summer for his replacement on the November ballot.
