Lane Closures Create Delays On Business 40

On Tuesday morning, lane mergers led to traffic jams on Business 40 from Stratford Road to Broad Street. DAVID FORD/WFDD

The Business 40 improvement project continues this week in the Triad, and the new phase of construction and related lane closures will present some challenges for local commuters.

Construction on the Peters Creek Parkway section began last month, and will be completed by next Fall. But starting at 9:00 p.m. Monday night, inside lanes in both directions underneath the Peters Creek Parkway bridge closed as workers begin constructing a new overpass there. It will eventually replace the current bridge over Business 40.

While the distance of the lane closures will be relatively short, rush hour traffic delays are expected beginning Tuesday morning. They will continue through mid-January.

Detour signs will be placed on local streets, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation is encouraging commuters to take alternative routes if possible, to avoid delays.

While this will be an inconvenience for travelers, it is not the 20-month, full closure of Business 40 in downtown Winston-Salem. That 1.2 stretch of construction is slated to begin in the Fall of 2018.
