The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has voted to move forward with a process that could call into question the eligibility of politicians like President Joe Biden to receive Communion.

U.S. Catholic bishops clashed virtually Thursday over whether Catholic politicians who support abortion rights should continue to receive Communion.

Richard Malone had faced scrutiny for allegedly mishandling sexual abuse claims against the priests in his diocese. He announced Wednesday that the pope had accepted his request to "retire early."

Gomez has been archbishop of Los Angeles, the largest Roman Catholic diocese in the U.S., for most of the past decade. He has been vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops since 2016.

Bishop Thomas Paprocki is telling priests in his diocese not to offer sacraments to people in same-sex marriages. A Catholic LGBT group calls the decree "mean-spirited and unchristian in the extreme."

Robert Finn, head of Kansas City's diocese, is the only U.S. bishop convicted of shielding a sexually abusive priest. Supporters say Finn received conflicting advice about how to handle the problem.
