The leaves are falling, a chill has entered the air, and autumn is officially here! We know our listeners are always looking to keep up with their friends and communities, so we asked you what you were looking forward to this fall.

After receiving a few more answers from our staff, here's a roundup of some of the best things to do to celebrate the beginnings of autumn!

1. View the changing leaves (especially from a convertible!)

"One of my favorite places to enjoy fall is in my husband's convertible! I like to lean my seat back and look up as he drives through the fall foliage. If it's a chilly day, we blast the heater. We call this 'Heat on the feet, air in the hair!'

This year, the convertible will be extra special because Tom's mom, at 93 years old, can no longer go on walks with us, but she can still ride in the convertible, so this will allow her to breathe the crisp, cool air as we all marvel at the beauty of rural North Carolina in the fall!"
- Rebecca H.

2. Visiting a local farm to pick apples or pumpkins

There's nothing better than a farm fresh apple, and we're surrounded by a wealth of local farmland here in North Carolina. Take advantage of the season to visit a local farm or farmer's market and pick up some seasonal goods.

3. Bake a seasonal dessert

After you pick up your produce, what better way to spend your evening than making a special dessert? A pumpkin or apple pie is a classic, but for those looking to for something different, you may want to try sonker, a regional favorite!

4. Fall cinema screenings

Traditional autumn media might include a seasonal movie, like Autumn in New York, or something to welcome in the holidays, like Hocus Pocus. For the daring, some skip Halloween and head right to Christmas once the cold weather comes in, maybe Elf or The Santa Claus is playing on your TV!

5. Lighting a fire to warm up yourself and your home

"We always look forward to the first fire of the season in our fireplace at home."
- Teresa R.

6. Go on a hike

When the weather starts to cool, it's the perfect time to head to the mountain for a hike! Make sure to wear layers, pack some water, and map your trail. For those looking to stay local, you can also check out some neighborhood walking trails.

7. Cheer on your favorite team

You may dread it, you may love it, but it's undeniable that with fall comes a new season of sports! Football fans may be looking forward to tailgating the game or strategizing their fantasy football team. Whether you rep blue, gold, or something else, this season of football has a lot of fun in store!

8. Last but not least, our staff likes to welcome the season with our annual Look Up and Listen trip to Hanging Rock State Park!

Thank you to everyone who joined us on October 21st. We hope you enjoyed making s'mores, stargazing, and hearing some spooky stories. For WFDD, this event is the real launch of fall!
