U.S. Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina was on the field Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a Virginia sports complex. He was practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

Walker represents North Carolina's 6th District, which includes parts of Guilford, Alamance, Durham, and several other counties.

The Greensboro Republican serves as a pitcher on the GOP team, and was practicing with the team in Alexandria, Va., when a man began shooting.

NPR has confirmed the identity of the assailant as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill.

After the incident, Walker said he's “Shaken, but OK.”

He also praised Capitol Hill Police and asked followers to pray for victims in the shooting, which include Rep. Steve Scalise, the Republican Majority Whip, from Louisiana.

When asked for an interview Wednesday morning, Walker's communications director said the congressman did not want to do any press interviews that day.

The FBI has now taken over the investigation.

The Congressional Baseball Game is an annual contest between Republicans and Democrats that benefits Washington, D.C., charities.
