The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed after a lengthy standoff with officers Wednesday night as 59-year-old Gideon Macon. Two people — including a deputy — were wounded in the incident.

A 911 call alerted authorities to a shooting at a residence just east of downtown Denton Wednesday night. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office says arriving officers learned that the suspect had fired into a home, wounding a resident.

Officers came under fire at the scene. According to an agency release, one deputy was struck and airlifted to a hospital. He is described as a longtime officer with the department and a member of the emergency response team.

The sheriff’s office says both of the shooting victims are recovering from their injuries. They have not been identified.

The standoff continued for several hours and the suspect kept changing positions. Officers ultimately shot and killed the suspect.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a probe of the incident, a standard practice when law enforcement officers shoot someone.
