North Star LGBTQ+ Community Center is celebrating its reopening and 10th anniversary in Winston-Salem this Saturday.

The facility provides a welcoming space for individuals in the queer community. Board of Directors Chair Cindia Gonzalez says the center receives visitors from Winston, surrounding counties, and even rural areas.

She says they often see youth who may not feel supported at home.

"The center gives them a place to come, where they can actually have an opportunity just to have a conversation," Gonzalez says. "It can really change your outlook on everything."

She says it's important people have a place where they can be themselves unapologetically.

The center will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. Gonzalez says North Star hopes to create new programming that's responsive to community needs.

The celebration is open to the public, with a reception starting at 1 p.m. this Saturday at 930 Burke Street in Winston-Salem.
