The Guilford County Behavioral Health Center in Greensboro opened in June and serves children, adolescents, and adults with behavioral health needs. That includes urgent care services available 24/7.

Dr. Archana Kumar, medical director of Cone Health Behavioral Health Services, says those who come to the center can be seen much faster than in an emergency room and then be connected to the appropriate resources. She says the center is unique in its approach.

“So I think the big difference with our center, we can do lab work to medically clear a patient and find the appropriate inpatient bed for them which most of the behavioral health urgent care centers don't do," she says. "So we manage the physical along with the mental health.”

Outpatient services include individual therapy, medication management, and what's called a peer living room, which is staffed by those who are in recovery and certified to offer support and resources.

The $20 million center is a collaboration between Guilford County, Sandhills Center, and Cone Health.
