5-Year-Old Killed In Drive-By Shooting; 3 Teenagers Charged

Three people, including two juveniles, have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old Winston-Salem boy Saturday.

Witnesses say several males were in a car firing handguns near apartments on Cole Road.

A 5-year-old boy was struck in the head by a bullet. He was rushed to emergency surgery but could not be saved.

Three teens - one 17, one 15 and one 14 - were arrested in connection with the boy's death.

Police say the shooting appears to be a random act of violence and that the boy's apartment was apparently not intentionally targeted. Three other units were struck by gunfire but no one else was injured.

Wake Forest University Seeks Dismissal In Shooting Lawsuit

Wake Forest University is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit stemming from a fatal shooting on campus in 2018.

Najee Ali Baker was shot and killed as he left a party being held at The Barn, an on-campus events venue.

In the lawsuit, Baker's mother alleges that university officials ignored a report calling for campus police to provide extra security at student events and for failing to provide enough security measures to prevent the shooting.

Wake Forest attorneys dispute those allegations, arguing that even if they are true, the lawsuit fails to prove that the university's actions had anything to do with Baker's death.

Baker was a student and football player at Winston-Salem State University. Two people are facing criminal charges in connection with his death.

House Schedules Override Vote On Cooper's NC Budget Veto

Gov. Roy Cooper won't get to influence a final state budget unless enough fellow Democrats uphold his veto of a spending plan penned by General Assembly Republicans.

The GOP-controlled state House scheduled for Monday an override vote on Cooper's budget veto. Only three Democrats sided with House Republicans during a final budget vote last week. Republicans likely won't be successful unless that number more than doubles.

Cooper called the GOP budget an "absolute failure" for lacking Medicaid expansion and cutting corporate taxes. Republicans say Cooper is blocking state worker pay raises and other health care benefits with his veto.

GOP Runoff Voters Pick Between NC Doctors In The House

Voters in Tuesday's Republican primary runoff in eastern North Carolina will decide on a candidate to succeed the late Rep. Walter Jones Jr.

The campaign between urologist Greg Murphy of Greenville and Kinston pediatrician Joan Perry has largely been about who can best carry the conservative mantle for the 3rd Congressional District. The winner advances to the September general election.

Democrat Mansfield Drops Out Of 2020 US Senate Race

A former North Carolina state lawmaker has dropped out of the state's 2020 U.S. Senate race weeks after he announced his bid.

Eric Mansfield released a statement Friday announcing that he was ending his campaign for the Democratic nomination to take on Republican incumbent Thom Tillis. The physician who previously served as a state senator said he came to the decision after discussing it with his family, patients and supporters.

Wilmington Police Say Woman Vandalized 2 Confederate Statues

Police in a coastal North Carolina city are looking for a woman who they say vandalized two Confederate statues.

Wilmington police say that someone threw orange paint onto the statues sometime Thursday morning.

Surveillance video released by police shows the woman running up to a statue at around 3:15 a.m., dousing it with a bucket of paint and running away.

Two years ago, the same statues were vandalized following a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
