The Guilford County Veterans Memorial is hosting a service this Sunday where residents can learn about a campaign to renovate the site.

The initiative started after Tropical Storm Debby uprooted a red oak and damaged the memorial grounds in August of last year. Now, funds are being raised to not only repair the area but also bring it into the future.

Guilford County Veterans Memorial Board Chair Susan Danielsen says they plan to update their website with photos and biographical details of the individuals honored.

"There are people whose names are memorialized on those bricks that no one's ever heard of and they've made remarkable contributions to our nation, and their stories deserve to be told," she says. "It's one way to make these stories known to people who were outside the physical grounds of the memorial."

The planned improvements include adding new flags to represent the branches of the armed forces and increasing space for brick memorials. The grounds will also receive a decommissioned Huey helicopter from the N.C. Vietnam Helicopter Pilot Association.

A Memorial Day ceremony where residents can learn more will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Greensboro.
