Former Senator Andrew Brock left his seat earlier this summer when appointed by Senate Leader Phil Berger to the Board of Review. The Board hears unemployment insurance benefit claim appeals.

Republican activists from the 34th Senate District chose Davie commissioner Dan Barrett to fill the vacancy. He ran unsuccessfully for the GOP gubernatorial nomination in 2004.

According to The Salisbury Post, Barrett beat Salisbury attorney Bill Graham and former Rowan commissioner Chad Mitchell.

Gov. Roy Cooper is now required to appoint Barrett. The legislature reconvenes on Friday.
