Catty Moore sworn in as WS/FCS interim superintendent amid budget crisis

Catty Moore was sworn in Monday morning as interim superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, stepping in as the district faces a $42 million budget shortfall. She replaces Tricia McManus, who is retiring after five years with the district. 

Moore brings more than three decades of experience in North Carolina public education. She has held leadership roles in Wake County and Durham Public Schools, and is currently a member of the North Carolina State Board of Education.

During her first address to the school board, Moore acknowledged the seriousness of the budget challenges facing the district.

"There is incredible anxiety, even lack of trust around our community, around what's happening fiscally and financially within the district,” she said. “And that's not a small thing. That's a big thing, and it's a big number, and it requires big thinking, and, quite frankly, sacrifice, adjustment and kind of what I call a reset.”

Moore said she’s committed to working alongside staff, board members, and the community to help establish a path forward. She will serve as interim while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
