Boone climate plan calls for community-wide carbon neutrality by 2050

The Boone Town Council has adopted a community climate action plan that sets new goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The plan sets goals to achieve carbon neutrality in the town government by 2030 and community-wide by 2050.

Hitting those goals will mean using the electric grid more efficiently, making energy upgrades, and transitioning to eco-friendly vehicles.

Sustainability and Special Projects Manager for the Town of Boone George Santucci says a series of surveys and public input sessions provided feedback on the needed changes including better transportation options that don’t require a car.

“I’m really excited [about] the way this community has embraced this challenge and the progress we’ve been able to make with the support with both leadership and our community,” he says.

The town has been proactive in addressing climate change in recent years. Since February 2022, all municipal electricity has been generated using renewable energy sources.
