Carolina Hurricanes Jacob Slavin (74) scores against Ottawa Senators goalie Andrew Hammond (30) during an NHL hockey game in Raleigh on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Slavin made his Olympic debut for Team USA in Milan in 2026, winning gold.

With the Olympic torch now extinguished, WFDD takes a look at how athletes with North Carolina ties fared at this year’s Winter Games for this edition of Carolina Curious.

Seven athletes with Tar Heel connections competed over the past two weeks. Five of them are on the Carolina Hurricanes and played in the men’s hockey tournament, but not under the same flag.

Jacob Slavin made his Olympic debut for Team USA, winning the gold yesterday. Seth Jarvis was part of Canada’s silver medal-winning team. Sebastian Aho and the Finns took bronze. Two other players representing Denmark competed, but their team didn’t make the podium.

Also representing Team USA was Queens University alum Mystique Ro. She finished 15th in Women’s skeleton and 7th in the mixed team event.

Queens Athletics Director Cherie Swarthout was among those cheering her on.

“I think she had an absolutely outstanding debut in the Olympics. We're going to see more of her, and I think she's just going to continue her trajectory upward.”

Duke University fans also had reason to celebrate, as sophomore Eunice Lee competed in short track speed skating for Team USA. She placed eighth in the relay event.
