North Carolina public school students performed better on standardized tests this past spring compared to the year before, according to data reviewed Wednesday by the State Board of Education. But the pupils remain below proficiency rates recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic.

No reelection campaign for Democratic representative after North Carolina GOP redrew U.S. House map

U.S. Rep. Kathy Manning announced Thursday that she will not file under lines that state election data suggests could net Republicans at least three more seats. Manning's district is now considered a GOP-leaning district. It's one of four challenged earlier this week by Black and Latino voters in a federal lawsuit alleging the new map weakens minority voting power to strengthen “the state's white majority.”

WS/FCS joins other districts in defying state law and starting school early

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education voted to approve an academic calendar with an earlier start and end date, which will be out of compliance with state law. Several other North Carolina districts are making the same move.
