The mood was festive during a party for Democrat candidates at the Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem last night. The crowd anxiously awaited election returns for city council and the mayor's seat.
GREENSBORO - City councilwoman Nancy Vaughan defeated incumbent Robbie Perkins to become the next mayor of Greensboro. Vaughan, who also finished ahead of Perkins in the Oct. 8 primary, won handily Tuesday, with 59 percent of the vote, compared to 40 percent for Perkins.
North Carolina Democrats are celebrating big wins in targeted local races across the state, including Charlotte, Greensboro and Boone, and Winston-Salem.
In the Village of Clemmons, challenger Nick Nelson beat incumbent John Bost for the mayor's seat.
North Carolina voters are at the polls today in all or portions of 94 of the state's 100 counties to cast their ballots in the municipal general election.
