The Greensboro Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday approved a request that could pave the way for a new luxury townhome development, despite opposition.
The decision will rezone a property sitting on 1.3 acres in the Starmount Forest neighborhood from single-family to conditional, multi-family. It would allow for the construction of ten luxury townhomes at the site.
Commissioner Stu Nichols said higher-density housing is needed as more jobs come to the area.
"If we are going to aspire to building enough housing to have those new employees, new residents, coming in to work on this economic development that is booming, no pun intended, we've got to do stuff like this," Nichols said.
The "boom" he's referring to, in part, is Boom Supersonic, the aerospace company that will be manufacturing its high-speed jet in the Triad.
Some neighbors voiced opposition to the project, citing safety and traffic concerns. But commissioners pointed to a need to grow and diversify Greensboro's housing stock.
The decision comes a month after residents filed a lawsuit against the city over another luxury townhome project.
If this current rezoning is appealed, the City Council will hold a public hearing on the matter on Aug. 19.
