A new book tells the stories of the Black World War II pilots who were lost in combat

NPR's Ayesha Rascoe talks to Cheryl W. Thompson about her book, "Forgotten Souls: The Search for the Lost Tuskegee Airmen," which chronicles Black World War II pilots who were lost in combat.

Cheryl W. Thompson is an investigative correspondent for NPR. She previously oversaw member station investigations and was the inaugural editor of the station investigations team in 2021, where she was a player/coach. She collaborated with Member stations in Alaska, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Washington, and with Columbia University and several nonprofits, to do award-winning work, including "Improper Conduct," an investigation into how about 100 prosecutors in Ohio violated standards meant to protect a defendant's civil rights in criminal trials. That story won a first place National Headliner award in 2024.
