The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission is planning a mural for Sunrise Towers, a public housing complex.

Officials are searching for artists to design and paint a mural on the exterior walls of the 11-story building.

The project is budgeted for up to $150,000. Artist applications for the mural are due December 4.

It’s part of a joint initiative between the city of Winston-Salem and ASPIRE called the Choice Neighborhoods Public Art Revitalization Program. In 2020, the entities received a $30M federal grant to support neighborhoods with distressed public housing.

Last year, residents from the public housing complexes Crystal, Healy and Sunrise Towers protested against poor conditions. Leaders from ASPIRE, formerly the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem, insisted there were no outstanding maintenance repairs.
