The U.S. Department of Government Efficiency — also known as DOGE — is making cuts in the Triad. It has announced plans to terminate leases for several federal offices in the area as a cost savings measure.
Offices for the Food and Drug Administration, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Small Business Administration in Greensboro are all affected by the cuts.
“I think it’s a pretty significant impact," said Sam Funchess, the CEO of the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship, which houses the SBA program SCORE. It provides support for locals interested in starting or expanding their small businesses. The cuts mean the program will no longer have office space.
“SCORE met with over 1300 entrepreneurs in 2024, a lot of those meetings were held at the Nussbaum Center," he said. "And I don't know where they are going to meet with those entrepreneurs come June of this year.”
The lease for the office was supported by about $11,000 from the federal government annually. DOGE claims the lease terminations for all four organizations amount to nearly $900,000 in savings.
