Greensboro City Council looks to expand Doorway Project for the unhoused

The Doorway Project over the last few years has provided pallet homes for the unhoused during the winter. A proposal would see this initiative grow by adding two RV mobile sleeping trailers.

Greensboro Neighborhood Impact Manager Troy Powell told officials at a work session Thursday this was a cost-effective way to expand the project.

"We want to retain the 56 beds we have, and propose to utilize the two RVs on the same site so that we can house 27 more people during this year's winter program," he says.

According to a presentation, it would cost around $71,000 to lease the two trailers. In comparison, adding an additional 30 pallet shelters would cost around $800,000.

The City Council showed unanimous support for the proposal. Last year, the Doorway Project started in November and ran until March.
